Hugo Estecahandy is a PhD in Geography, specialization “Geopolitics”, and an affiliated researcher at the IFG Lab. He is specialized in the geopolitical stakes surrounding digital infrastructures, computing power, and cryptocurrencies, particularly in the post-Soviet space.

In 2026, Hugo Estecahandy obtained his PhD on the geopolitics of cryptocurrencies and digital mining industries in Russia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. His dissertation was conducted within the IFG Lab and the GEODE project. His doctoral research focused on the impacts, from the local to the global scale, of the materialization of cryptocurrency digital infrastructures through the computing power enabling their operation. More specifically, his work examined the networks of actors involved in the development of cryptocurrency mining and their strategies, as well as the (political, climatic, and technical) characteristics that make specific territories attractive to thisindustry.

His research scope has now been extended to include the strategic uses of cryptocurrencies by state and para-state actors, as well as the geopolitical issues related to the deployment of computing power for artificial intelligence (AI).

Since 2023, he has coordinated the “Materialities of the Digital” working group within the CNRS research network “Internet, AI and Society”, and co-organizes its monthly seminar.
